Tanenbaum has documented path-breaking—but often unseen work—by a group of religiously motivated individuals we call Peacemakers in Action. Some are “people of the cloth,” but many others work from a deep spiritual conviction that combines a personal drive to actively combat conflicts with a vision of a better future. We recently launched our memorandum, Strategically Engaging Religious Peacebuilders: Shifting a Traditional Paradigm in U.S. Diplomacy, distilled from Tanenbaum’s second volume of Peacemakers in Action: Profiles in Religious Peacebuilding. We are proud to share with you what we have learned from 20 years of supporting international religious peacebuilding.
Tanenbaum thanks the Henry Luce Foundation for its generous support of this policy memo and its many other contributions to Tanenbaum’s study of and work with relatively unknown religious peacebuilders around the globe. Tanenbaum also expresses its gratitude to Susan Hayward, Senior Advisor, Religion & Inclusive Societies, United States Institute of Peace and Katherine Marshall, Senior Fellow and Visiting Professor, Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs for their invaluable contributions to this paper.
