World Refugee Day

According to the UNHCR, there are over 100 million forcibly displaced people in the world.

The statistics are staggering, but so are the stories. Communities — families, neighborhoods, temples, mosques, churches, friend groups — fragmented, fleeing from persecution, human rights violations, and violent conflict.

This World Refugee Day, we invite you to get to know some of the individual faces behind the world refugee crisis, like the women of Tastakel. They are one portion of the larger whole: the parents and their children who grow up in refugee camps, the students, the teachers, the doctors, the community actors, the aid workers.

The first hand experiences of some of Tanenbaum’s Peacemakers in Action illustrate the dynamic layers of what it is like to be a refugee, to work with refugees, and to count them as friends, colleagues, and part of a new kind of community. Peacemakers like Dr. Sarah AK Ahmed of Iraq, Hind Kabawat of Syria, and Canon Andrew White carry these stories. Hind founded Tastakel, a nonprofit for Syrian women displaced by the war in their home countries. The women of Tastakel exhibit the resilience of so many refugees. Read their stories here: https://tastakel.org/success-stories/. On this day, and every day, Tanenbaum and the Peacemakers in Action stand #WithRefugees

As the war in Ukraine rages on, refugee numbers will continue to increase worldwide. Read the Peacemakers in Action Network Statement on the War in Ukraine here.
