Religion and mental health can be challenging topics to discuss. To maximize mental and emotional health, everything needs to be on the menu, including the topics that challenge us most.
In honor of Mental Health Awareness month this May, Tanenbaum is re-sharing our Conscientious Care Conversation: Religion and Mental Health.
Panelist Dr. Peteet, former president of APA’s caucus on Religion, Spirituality, and Psychiatry, points out that religion is not often discussed with patients due to providers’ discomfort with the topic. Asking patients about their religious or spiritual practices places religion on the mental health menu. Inquiring about religion and spirituality with respectful curiosity allows providers to learn from their patients while treating the whole person.
This Religion and Mental Health Conversation explores the complex dynamic between religion and mental health while also providing clinicians with tangible tools to meet the religious and spiritual needs of their patients.
