The New York Times features Tanenbaum Peacemaker in Action Hind Kabawat and Tanenbaum in a recent article highlighting Hind’s role as the only female minister in Syria’s 23-member government.
Hind has trained communities of Syrians in multifaith collaboration since before the civil war began in 2011. At the heart of Hind’s peacebuilding work is her focus on women’s empowerment and inclusion in diplomacy.
Growing up as a Christian in Syria, Hind was surrounded by the rich multi-religious history of the region. Hind’s first-hand knowledge of her country has allowed her to cultivate meaningful dialogue among Sunnis, Shias, Christians, and Jews across the Middle East. Her appointment as the sole woman in Syria’s new government is a testament to the advances she has made in creating spaces for women in peacebuilding.
We look forward to witnessing the positive change her leadership will make during such a pivotal moment for Syria.
