Our Women’s History Month screening of the documentary, Long Line of Ladies, showed us that film has the power to share narratives and histories that move us closer to one another.
Panelists Shaandiin Tome and Alme Allen, Co-Director and Cast Member of the film, shared how storytelling can reveal truths, empower communities, and build collective empathy.
“This film is about Ahty and the empowerment of young women. It’s also about a community coming together to uplift her. It has taught me to understand that the world is a moving mechanism based on relationships. It’s less about, ‘What can I do for me?’ and more, ‘What can I put into the community to build up the community?’” – Shaandiin Tome
“This film is about the collective before self, and the collective of people are what heals… Allowing others to learn about our culture [I hope] builds an understanding with the broader community that not all Native people are the same.” – Alme Allen
