In 2009, the UN declared July 18 International Nelson Mandela Day, and it has been celebrated every year since. The commemoration, in honor of Nelson Mandela‘s struggles for democracy and contributions to the culture of peacebuilding and conflict resolution, reminds us that the path of a peacemaker is one of service and hardships.
Today, Mandela‘s legacy is carried on by many, including Tanenbaum Peacemaker in Action Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge. One year ago, Nozizwe was selected as the Director of the Quakers United Nations Office in Geneva. The well-deserved nomination came after 11 years of helming her own South-African organization, Embrace Dignity.
Before taking office in Geneva, Tanenbaum interviewed Nozizwe about her efforts with Embrace Dignity. Read “Until every woman and girl is free” here.
“It is easy to break down and destroy. The heroes are those who make peace and build.” – Nelson Mandela
