Fulfilling a Vision

Dear Tanenbaum Community,

This year, as Martin Luther King Day coincides with America’s inauguration of a new president, let’s remember that we have the power to set the tone for the year ahead.

Together, we honor Dr. King’s values of a beloved community, one made up of different ethnicities, backgrounds, religions, and beliefs.

Since Dr. King attended his first and only inauguration over 60 years ago, the rich landscape of our beloved community has evolved. Pivotal moments in history, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that Dr. King fought for, have paved the way for the equity and inclusion that some enjoy, and we continue to work toward.

Dr. King’s commitment to truth, love, and justice are met with a new sense of urgency in our workplaces, in global peacebuilding, in schools, and in health care settings. As America prepares for a new administration that impacts these spaces, we have the opportunity to challenge harmful and polarizing narratives not by overlooking our differences, but by understanding and sharing them with one another. We advance meaningful dialogue by listening intentionally, opening ourselves to learning, and ensuring all voices are included in the conversation.

In the spirit and words of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Junior, “We can very well set a mood of peace out of which a system of peace can be built.”

The future is always ours to create.

For now,

Rev. Mark Fowler, CEO, Tanenbaum
