A Religious Literacy Framework for Educators

Dear Friends,

Teaching about religion is essential for a comprehensive understanding of history, culture, and global society, yet many educators find the subject daunting. This collaborative workshop, featuring the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding and the Institute for Curriculum Services (ICS), provides teachers with a clear, constitutionally sound framework for bringing religious literacy into the classroom with confidence.

Join us on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, from 6:00 – 8:00PM ET to learn:

  • The 3Bs Framework (Tanenbaum): Go beyond instruction centered on lists and facts and dive into understanding how inclusive conversations about our beliefs, behaviors, and sense of belonging can shape more nuanced, identity-aware, and respectful encounters with religion and expressions of religious identity during the school day.
  • Legal Foundations & Best Practices (ICS): Demystify the “dos and don’ts” of religious studies. Explore the legal landscape of teaching religion in U.S. public schools and learn how to maintain an academic, non-devotional approach that respects the First Amendment.
  • Interdisciplinary Integration: Gain access to a toolkit of compelling digital resources and guidelines for incorporating learning about religion and religious identity across the humanities—including history, literature, art, music, and social studies.

Whether you are navigating real-world classroom challenges or looking for high-quality primary sources, this session empowers you to move past the tension (perceived or real) of teaching about religion. You will leave equipped to foster a learning environment that is rooted in historical accuracy, pedagogical best practices, and mutual respect.
