Peacebuilding Internship (Virtual or In-Person) – Summer 2024

THE ORGANIZATION

Tanenbaum promotes justice and builds respect for religious difference by transforming individuals and institutions to reduce prejudice, hatred, and violence.

As a secular and non-sectarian non-profit, Tanenbaum works to promote religious peacebuilders who help counter extremism and violence in armed conflicts, and tackles religious bullying of students, harassment in workplaces, and disparate health treatment for people based on their beliefs.

THE PROGRAM

Tanenbaum’s Peacebuilding program identifies, studies, and supports the work of religiously motivated peace actors in conflict zones around the world. Our initiatives with and on behalf of these women and men promote religious peacemaking as a legitimate and sometimes necessary component of conflict resolution/transformation, peacebuilding, and Track II (citizen) diplomacy.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is an opportunity for a motivated, currently enrolled student to help build the growing field of religious peacemaking. The successful candidate will support the Peacemakers in Action Network and work 10-20 hours weekly. Primary responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting the Peacebuilding Program staff to plan, organize, and execute the 2024 Peacemakers in Action Working Retreat.
  • Conducting outreach for the Peacemakers in Action case study podcast project for peace practitioners, universities, other NGOs, etc.
  • Researching the Peacemakers and their conflict zones to create and edit materials for the Peacebuilding program, including updating the Peacemaker in Action profiles on the Tanenbaum website.
  • Participating in and taking notes for Peacemaker in Action Network Calls and activities.
  • Drafting and editing profiles and other communication materials based on the Peacemakers’ experiences and techniques.
  • Working with the Peacebuilding team to develop additional ideas for disseminating Peacemakers in Action content.
  • Researching possible grant opportunities for upcoming Peacemaker in Action Network activities.
  • Searching the internet and academic databases to document and distribute media coverage of the Peacemakers in Action. (For more information on the Peacemakers, see: https://tanenbaum.org/peacemakers-in-action-network/meet-the-peacemakers/.)
  • Tracking media for updates regarding the Peacemakers, compiling a list of media updates to be distributed to the Peacemakers and other Peacebuilding contacts, and blogging on significant updates, news stories, and progress.
  • Assisting in preparing program staff for local, national and/or international events and conferences.
  • Supporting program capacity by managing files, archives, and materials.
  • Serving as a member of the program team, participating in weekly meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPECTATIONS

  • Commitment to the mission and goals of Tanenbaum
  • Academic background and/or experience in religion/religious studies, conflict resolution/transformation, peacebuilding
  • Background in writing and research a plus
  • Knowledge of global conflicts
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Fluency in Spanish or Arabic a plus
  • Computer skills, including Windows, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, and general internet research
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Capable of representing Tanenbaum and the Peacebuilding program in a professional manner at all times

All work produced for Tanenbaum through this internship is the work product of Tanenbaum and may not be used by the Intern outside of Tanenbaum-authorized activities.

COMPENSATION

The Peacebuilding Internship is an unpaid position. Tanenbaum will work with you and your school so that you can receive academic credit for the internship.
