Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) begins shortly before sunset on September 11th and ends at nightfall on September 13th, and Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) starts shortly before sunset on September 20th and ends at nightfall on September 21st. Known as the High Holy Days, they include such ancient rituals as the blowing of the shofar (ram’s horn), festive celebrations for Rosh Hashanah, incorporating foods to symbolize hope for a fruitful New Year, and fasting for Yom Kippur.
