Tanenbaum mourns the loss of former Israeli prime minister and president Shimon Peres, and remembers him as a man who remained steadfast in his commitment to public service and who pursued peace despite popular opinion or political favor.

As a leader who reflected complex and tumultuous times, Peres set an example as he dedicated himself to peace building both locally and globally, demonstrated by his participation in the1993 Oslo Peace Accords (for which he jointly won the Nobel Peace Prize alongside Israel’s then prime minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat). His founding of The Peres Center for Peace leaves a legacy of action and inspires us to join in the search for peace both at home and abroad—especially today, during this turbulent time in our national and international histories.

Peres once said, “You’re only as great as the cause you serve.” Let us each honor his passing by being part of the solution and by serving the cause of peace and justice.  Join me in finding strength in his wisdom, and in the lesson his life represents—that the pursuit of peace is far more noble than the entrenchment of hate.

Let us remember. Though Shimon Peres sadly did not live to see the peace he imagined, we still can.
